Practice, Projects & Progress
Bespoke study welcomes a wide range of students — from complete beginners discovering furniture making for the first time to experienced makers, designers, and independent woodworkers seeking focused development within a professional workshop. Some come to build strong hand skills and traditional cabinetmaking after experimenting at home, while others arrive with ambitious projects, commissions, or a desire to develop their own design identity through making.
We also work with established furniture businesses developing staff skills in areas such as laser and digital technologies, steam bending, laminating, and contemporary furniture development.
The flexibility of this course makes it especially attractive to international students, with study tailored around different durations, travel plans, and visa requirements, alongside the opportunity to experience British craftsmanship in the beautiful Somerset countryside.
Williams & Cleal has also supported makers through award-funded routes such as the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), helping practitioners deepen technical ability, refine their design language, and establish independent creative practices.
Bespoke experience
Sofia Karakatsanis - two blocks 15 wks and 20wks over a two year period
Sofia trained in fine furniture making at Williams & Cleal following her studies in design, and later established her own developing practice in the West Midlands. Her work explores the tension between beauty and the unconventional, often responding directly to the natural behaviour of timber through carving, surface treatment, and construction.
Awarded the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Jasper Weldon Scholarship in 2022, Sofia returned to Williams & Cleal for an extended period of focused study. This allowed her to deepen her technical ability, explore advanced processes such as steam bending and lamination, and develop new sculptural furniture pieces, including experimental seating work. Her time at Williams & Cleal formed a pivotal stage in her practice — bridging structured training with independent studio work, and supporting the development of a distinct design language that continues to evolve through her professional practice.
Asmau Musa Wada - 4 wks
Asmau joined us from Nigeria where she is setting up a company designing and making beds. She wanted an overview on the making processes and machines needed to set up her workshop.
"We visited a range of large workshops and a factory which used CNC machines. Now I know about different types of wood and how the beds will be made. I've been designing a range of beds and I have a list of the machines I need. It's been a very worthwhile four weeks.” Asmau
Andrew Owen - 12 wks
Having studied an HND in 'Furniture Studies' at Bucks College, Andrew wanted to hone his skills, and build upon his portfolio before finding himself a potential employer.
"My 3 month bespoke course allowed me to continue directly from where I left off at college, taking my work to the next level, in a commercial workshop environment. I learnt lots from watching the team working on commissions, which gave me something to aspire to!”
In More Detail
-
International students are warmly welcomed at Williams & Cleal, with the flexibility to begin study throughout the year and programmes tailored around different durations, attendance patterns, and visa requirements. Located in the Somerset countryside in the South West of England, the workshop offers the opportunity to study within one of the UK’s most beautiful and creative rural landscapes, surrounded by coast, moorland, and a long tradition of craftsmanship. For many students, time at Williams & Cleal becomes not only an immersive furniture making experience, but also a chance to experience life, culture, and travel within the UK while developing their practice within a focused and supportive workshop environment.
-
Because every programme is individually formed, the content is not predefined. Depending on your goals, your time here might involve:
Developing hand skills in traditional cabinetmaking
Sharpening, tool care, and precision bench techniques
Designing and making a personal furniture project
Exploring specific processes such as veneering, steam bending, or laminating
Building a portfolio for employment or further study
Gaining experience in a professional workshop environment
Developing a personal design direction or body of work
Understanding furniture construction at a deeper level
Some students come with a clear project in mind. Others begin with exploration and allow direction to emerge through making. Both approaches are equally supported.
-
Because the workshop operates throughout the year — closing only for two weeks at Christmas — bespoke study can begin at almost any time.
There is no fixed course length. Your time here can range from a short intensive period to several months or longer, depending entirely on your needs and availability.
This makes the programme particularly suitable for international students, career changers, recent graduates, and practising makers looking for focused development outside of a rigid academic structure.
-
One of the most valuable aspects of bespoke study at Williams & Cleal is being fully immersed in a working furniture workshop.
Alongside your own learning, you will observe and engage with work at different stages — from student exercises through to advanced practitioner pieces and commissioned furniture. This shared environment encourages conversation, exchange of ideas, and a deeper understanding of how furniture making operates in a professional context.
The result is a learning experience that is not only tailored, but genuinely connected to real making.
-
Because each bespoke programme is individually designed, fees are based on duration, level of tuition, and workshop use.

Visit the workshops
Visiting the school or attending a short course can be the best way to experience the workshop environment and understand whether the course is the right fit for you.
Prospective students are welcome to tour the workshop, meet the tutors, view current student work and discuss their ambitions in more detail. We encourage visitors to experience the atmosphere of the school first hand and see the standard of craftsmanship being produced within the workshop.
Many students first attend our ‘Five Day Introduction to Fine Furniture Making’ course before progressing onto longer term study with us. Visits can usually be arranged on weekdays, with evenings or weekends available by appointment where needed.
